Located in the middle of Southeast, Birmingham is easily accessible by road, rail and bus. Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport serves Birmingham.  It is located about 6 miles from downtown Birmingham business district. It offers connections to places within the US, such as Charlotte, Miami, Detroit, New Orleans, Houston, Chicago and Dallas. Airlines serving this airport include Delta Airlines, American Airlines, United Express, Southwest Airlines and US Airways.

To and From Airport: Several taxi companies, rental cars and limo service is available from the airport. Many rental cars are available on Concourse B (ground level). The Birmingham Door-to-Door Shuttle Service offers van service between the Birmingham International Airport and places throughout Alabama.

Birmingham is accessible easily by Car via interstate highway networks. The major highway routes serving the city are: Interstate-20 from Atlanta (east), Interstate-65 from Montgomery (south), Intertstate-65 from Nashville (north), Intertstate-20/59 from Jackson (southwest) and Intertstate-59 from Chattanooga (northeast), Interstate-459, US Highway 280 and US Highway 31.

Getting Around Birmingham

The public transportation system in Birmingham is well-developed. It is managed by the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority (BJCTA). The BJCTA buses serve the entire city of Birmingham. 

Getting Around by Bus

The BJCTA offers bus service in Birmingham under the branding Metro Are Express. The Metro Area Express (MAX) comprises of buses, trolley service and paratransit system. The buses run on over 40 routes. The rates for MAX vary depending on the rider’s age. The one-way for adults costs $1.25. DART Bus Trolley

Birmingham- Jefferson County Transit Authority runs a downtown circulator service known as “DART”, which comprises of one route in UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) area and two routes in the Birmingham central business district. It is perfect mode of transport to get around the Southside and downtown areas of Birmingham. It operates 6 days a week, from 10:00am until midnight.
